A WESTON-SUPER-MARE golfer will celebrate his remarkable 60-year journey with the town's golf club this September.

David Andow's relationship with the club began in 1964 when he relocated to the seaside town to help his parents with their hotel, and naturally extended his earlier interest in golf into club membership.

Mr Andow’s connection to the sport began during his childhood in Henbury, where he first learned to play.

Despite his achievements in the sport, which saw him acquire a 5 handicap, he decided against a professional path in golf and instead, sought other opportunities close to home in Bristol.

His association with Weston-super-Mare Golf Club came off to a promising start when he won the Bleadon Bowl in 1954, alongside his father.

This marked the beginning of a fruitful partnership with the club.

An illustrious record of victories followed, including an admirable five wins at the Scull Bowl Putting Championship.

In a remarkable turn of events, he reclaimed the Bleadon Bowl title 50 years later, this time with his son Tim.

The club, however, was not only a place for sporting victories.

In 1969, Mr Andow met his future wife Sue and together, they took part in the mixed foursomes.

Their joint victory led to the subsequent knockout stages and eventually culminated in their marriage a year later in 1970.

His dedication to the club extended beyond personal achievements.

He took on various roles, including acting as captain and president, represented the club in different teams and consistently showed support for the Seniors section.

His presence at the Past Captains Golf and evening meal was unfailing, and his valued advice was often sought by incoming captains.

A spokesperson for the Weston-super-Mare Golf Club commented on Mr Andow's contributions.

They said: "Having graced the fairways for a number of years he is a great golfing traditionalist, a perfect gentleman and his golfing etiquette exemplar.

"David despite his aging years and health issues can still compete on the golf course scoring a gross 71 in a Seniors Competition in July 2022.

"Shooting below your age is something not many of us will achieve.

"David's contributions, both on and off the course, reflects a lifelong dedication to golf and Weston-super-Mare Golf Club and we all wish him many more years on the golf course."

Andow's long and remarkable journey with the club is set to be celebrated this coming September, with all of the community invited.
