SCHOOL children got the chance to learn about fire safety first-hand at fire brigade open days held across North Somerset.

Avon Fire and Rescue held a series of safety sessions over the summer holidays.

During the sessions, visitors were given the opportunity to see a fire engine up close and ask real firefighters questions about the equipment they use at a fire or incident.

Children aged from four to 11 attended fire stations in Weston, Yatton and in Bristol with their parents to learn more about fire safety and staying safe in and around the water.

They also took part in a fun fitness challenge with the brigade's official mascot, Fido the Fire Dog.

Crew manager at Weston Red Watch, Craig Carter, said: "I recently worked with firefighters at Patchway Fire Station to deliver a summer safety session in which over 60 people attended.

"The children enjoyed getting to know their local fire station and crews better – and learnt how to keep themselves and their families safe in case of an emergency.

"We might have even inspired some future Avon firefighters."

The brigade offers a selection of educational packages for different age groups and are designed to deliver 'engaging' safety messages.

The service says they are 'committed' to providing fire, water and road safety education to young people to help keep them safe, such as talks in schools.

An educational package can be requested by visiting the Avon and Fire Rescue website at www.avonfire.gov.uk/our-services/educational-services.

Children and young people advisor, Rachel Stewart, said: "These summer safety sessions were designed to educate young children and their guardians on fire safety and the risks associated with being in or near to the water in a fun, and informative, way.

"Fire crews, and my colleagues in the children and young people team, have been pleased to see so many of our communities come along to our station, engage and take away key safety advice.

"A special thanks to firefighters at Weston Red Watch, Yate Red Watch, Southmead Red Watch, Patchway White Watch and Kingswood White Watch for your support and hard work."

Avon Fire provides emergency services to Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.
