STUDENTS at Weston College marked Big Green Week with a litter pick around the community last Thursday, September 29.
In a bid to green up their campus, plumbing students walked around the Summerlands and Locking Road areas of Weston with litter pickers and bags.
Young people from South West Skills Campus marked the week, working with other students across the Weston College group, with a beach clean and talks on sustainability.
The Great Big Green Week is the UK’s largest celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature. It was held from September 24 and October 2.
Director of curriculum development, Mr Andy Davidson, said all of the students got involved in helping to combat climate breakdown.
He said: "The students have considered their place in the community and how they can make that a better place.
"Starting with litter picking and beach cleaning and then moving to projects such as building sustainable bridges for a local forest school where young children discover nature."
Plumbing lecturer Gary Jones said: "We will continue working within our area to show that we're there for locals and not just an educational provider.
"Our students are keen to carry on with work and help people out with mowing the lawn, aiding the elderly with shopping and becoming respected members of the community. It all helps future employment opportunities too.
"By Christmas time, we hope to collect around 50kg of waste that will go some way towards making the community a better place to live."
