A SHOP to reduce food waste and tackle the climate crisis has opened in Weston.
The Stable, on Wadham Street, has now opened The Food Shop where people can buy surplus fresh and ambient food on membership where a shopping basket worth £40 could be bought for just £5.
Organisers hope to make the store accessible for those who are struggling with the cost-of-living crisis or find it difficult to access a supermarket.
Anyone in the community can access the scheme with an affordable membership fee of £5 per household over six months.
Some of the food on offer includes pasta, eggs, drinks, fruit, breakfast cereals, baby food, frozen and chilled items.
A spokesperson said: "We really want to help reduce the food waste we produce as a population and by purchasing these items on surplus, we hope it will go a long way in achieving that.
"It has been created to feel like a farm shop and we expect that a basket of shopping worth around £40 will actually cost just £5.
"Members will be able to visit The Food Shop weekly to purchase a range of items that will then be priced at the till."
The Food Shop opened last week and has already seen more than 100 people sign-up.
It is now open on Monday from 10am to 12 noon; Thursday from 10am to 7pm, and Friday from 10am to 3pm.
To become a member visit The Food Shop during opening hours.
It has been developed by The Stable and Weston Town Council as part of the Weston Food Club Network.
