A MAN was shot by police inside a property near Weston earlier today, November 28.
At around 11.30am, officers conducted a search of a house in Wick St Lawrence where a man in his 30s was later shot by police.
The property, in Wick Road, was searched as part of an investigation into possible firearms offences.
Police say a cordon is also in place at the scene while enquiries are carried out.
His next of kin have been informed.
The man was provided with first aid before he was taken to Southmead Hospital where he remains in 'a critical but stable condition'.
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: "Officers attended a house on Wick Road, Wick St Lawrence, as part of an investigation into possible firearms offences.
"A man inside the property was subsequently shot by police."
The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) which has confirmed it will carry out an investigation.
Adam O’Loughlin, chief inspector, said: “We understand the local community will be shocked and people will want to know what happened.
"Our thoughts are with the man and his family as he continues to receive treatment at hospital.
"Anyone with concerns about this incident is encouraged to speak to officers at the scene or contact their local neighbourhood team."
