UPDATE: North Somerset Council has confirmed that Marine Lake and its surrounding footpaths have reopened.
The seal has safely returned to the water.
WESTON'S Marine Lake has been closed after a grey seal was spotted taking a rest.
The seal was found relaxing near the lake yesterday (Wednesday, October 18).
Posting on Facebook, a spokesperson from Weston's seafront team said: "We have taken the decision to temporarily close Marine Lake in Weston-super-Mare and the footpaths around the lake with immediate effect.
"This is to enable our seafront team to deal with a grey seal in the lake.
"Our seafront rangers are on site and keeping people out of the way. Our priority is to protect people and wildlife.
"We all love seals but please do not come down to take a look as this is likely to cause the seal more distress. You will also be directed away from the area. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
"We are working with wildlife experts and the situation is being managed.
"We'll update again when the situation is resolved, and the lake and footpaths are reopen."
