A PROJECT to build a new community space has received a £300,000 boost from the Government as part of its UK Government Community Ownership fund.
Winscombe Community Associations' (WCA) WiNSpace project aims to upgrade the community centre to create a modern, inclusive and inviting venue for the parish.
It is hoped that the new space will be a source of pride for local residents of all ages "for generations to come."
The grant brings the project one step closer to life.
WCA worked hard on the grant bid and was supported by both John Penrose, local MP, and the parish council.
The WCA website reads: "We want to share the great news with you that we have been granted £300,000 from the Government as part of their Community Ownership Fund.
"They were impressed with our ambition to upgrade the community centre and are supportive of our plans for the new building.
"We worked hard on the grant bid and it was a lot of work. However, we couldn’t have done it without the support of the Parish Council and our local MP John Penrose.
"We still have a few legal hoops to go through, but we are now one step closer to bringing our new building to life.
"We want to create more than just a building.
"Winscombe & Sandford Parish is a truly special place to live and we pride ourselves on our flourishing community. We want to build a space which nurtures and supports our community and the generations to come.
"We envisage:
- "A modern hub of life and activity;
- "A facility for all ages which everyone feels ownership of;
- "A venue well connected to other community assets;
- "A space we can take pride in."
The WCA currently has other applications being assessed, including £200,000 from the National Lottery. The association is also waiting to hear the results of the Parish survey regarding grant funding.
Whilst it has received 75 per cent of the funding needed to make the plans a reality, the WCA still need residents' support. You can donate via their website or at the Donation Station at the Community Centre.
