Avon Fire & Rescue Service is urging all households to take part in Register My Appliance Week.
The campaign encourages ownership of everyday household appliances, whether newly acquired, long-established or previously owned, to be recorded.
It allows brands to locate them swiftly should they need to.
Despite the fact that recalls of home appliances are rare, problems can still occur over time.
A free home adjustment can promise an extended safer lifespan for such equipment.
The Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances has provided a simple solution with its Register My Appliance portal.
This site offers one-click registration to over 70 prominent brands, accepting both new and old appliances.
A significant number of these everyday essentials remain unregistered, therefore untraceable.
Temporary area manager Steve Quinton highlighted the importance of this process.
He believes registration is a worthwhile investment of time.
Mr Quinton said:"Given we are all concerned that our possessions need to last longer, working safely and efficiently, it makes sense to take care to register all of our large appliances as well as those small appliances that we're increasingly relying on in the kitchen.
"It’s absolutely free and means you will be the first to know if a safety repair is ever needed.
"Just a few minutes well-spent for peace of mind and it might even extend the life of the appliance."
Mr Quinton also suggested that caution should be exercised when purchasing second-hand appliances.
He added: "While manufacturers and outlets may use slightly different terms to describe ‘nearly new’ or pre-used appliances, it’s always good to question why the product is reduced and check for a warranty."
Potential purchases can range from 'out-of-box' or 'open box', 'graded' or 'factory seconds' and 'refurbished' to 'display models'.
Each category carries its own set of potential concerns, however documented assurances can provide peace of mind.
