WESTON'S Marine Lake is due to close for over a month for further restoration works.
The tidal lake will be closed from Tuesday, February 6 until the week starting Monday, March 25.
Specialist contractor Teignmouth Maritime Services will remove built-up silt at the lake.
Following this, enhancements will be made to the walkways, steps, ramps, and the public toilets.
These enhancements, which are part of a programme of work made possible thanks to North Somerset Council’s successful bid for £20 million investment from the UK government’s Levelling Up Fund, are expected to be finished by Spring 2025.
Councillor Mike Solomon, the council's executive member responsible for seafronts, said: “Dredging is an important next step in our exciting plans for Marine Lake within our Levelling Up funded programme.
"I’m sure local people, like me, will be encouraged to see this continued progress.
“Our Levelling Up funding is able to continue the work done previously thanks to the council’s earlier investment in bringing the lake back into use as an outdoor swimming and watersports destination.
"This was part of our 'Great Lakes' project, which also included work to improve Clevedon's Marine Lake and Portishead Lake Grounds.”
The council continues to work closely with the Weston Marine Lake Mudlarks, a group of volunteers who assist with the management of the lake. The group has said that the lake is a "key attraction in the town."
Claire Trevor-Roper, one of the directors of the Mudlarks, said: "We’re extremely pleased that the council remains committed to not only maintaining but regenerating Marine Lake as a key attraction in the town."
More details of the Levelling Up Fund can be found on North Somerset Council's website: "We have successfully applied for the Government’s Levelling up Fund as part of the placemaking vision for Weston-super-Mare.
"The investment will be used to focus on several high-profile sites across Weston’s town centre and seafront to transform the culture, leisure and retail experience for residents, business and visitors. This will help to:
- "Reinvent iconic heritage buildings;
- "Support local businesses;
- "Create new jobs;
- "Deliver a year-round experience-led economy for the future."
Other focus areas include the Tropicana, Birnbeck Pier, and Grove Park.
