Green-fingered residents can become master composters and help teach others to compost.

If you're passionate about sustainability and want to share your knowledge with your local community, a master composter workshop is taking place on March 26.

Organised by North Somerset Council and Garden Organic, master composters are trained volunteers who educate people about composting.

This knowledge can be shared in a variety of ways, such as attending events, giving advice, writing newsletters or even through social media posts.

This eco-friendly initiative helps volunteers to not only enhance their own composting skills but also assist others.

In return for their services, they are offered training on composting, expert advice, and membership to Garden Organic.

The upcoming training workshop is taking place at Yeo Valley Organic Garden from 10am to 4.30pm.

During the morning session, an in-depth workshop on home composting will be available for attendees.

Those aspiring to become master composters will remain for an afternoon training session.

Individuals interested in composting, but unsure about volunteering, can drop by for the morning session only.

Councillor Annemieke Waite, North Somerset Council’s executive member for climate, waste and sustainability, said: "The master composters scheme is a fantastic way for people to learn how to compost, and then use those skills to educate and inspire their local community.

"Rather than putting garden waste into green bins, we'd encourage everyone to compost if they can. Composting has big environmental benefits, as it saves greenhouse gas emissions – one year of composting can save the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide that your kettle makes in a year."

Kate Eastment, project coordinator at Garden Organic, said: "North Somerset Master Composters is a fantastic project to get involved in if you’re interested in composting and sustainability, and enjoy communicating with others.

“There are lots of ways you can make a difference as a master composter, depending on your skills and interests. There are opportunities to get to know other volunteers, working alongside each other at events or delivering workshops and talks. Some volunteers use their knowledge to support their immediate community, and others write articles for press and social media.

"However you choose to get involved, you’ll receive excellent training from Garden Organic and have access to support and resources all year round from your local project coordinator."

Interested residents can secure a place by calling 07725 990708 or emailing keastment@gardenorganic.org.uk by March 19.
