NORTH Somerset Council has issued an update about the strong winds and high tides that have battered the region's seafronts today (Tuesday, April 9).
A North Somerset Council spokesperson said: "Update on seafronts at Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon and Portishead.
"All gates at the seafronts are now open, and pedestrians and vehicles can now access Weston-super-Mare’s promenade.
"Due to the high spring tides and strong winds last night and this morning, there was some flooding and debris was thrown onto the seafronts. Our grounds maintenance contractor Glendale will be cleaning up the affected areas.
"Thanks to everybody who stayed away from seafront areas while they were closed.
"Strong winds and high tides are also expected tonight and tomorrow morning. After assessing the situation, we're planning the following action.
"At Weston-super-Mare - at 5pm tonight we'll close the sea defence gates from the Marine Lake down to the Winter Gardens. The gates will remain closed until after tomorrow morning’s high tide at 8.43am.
"We'll keep the Knightstone Island road gate under review and only close it if it is necessary to prevent harm or flooding.
"Roads around the seafronts at Clevedon and Portishead are expected to remain open."
