A TEAM GB athlete has shared an insight into the world of competitive sports with students at Weston's Haywood Village Academy.

James Tomlinson, a Team GB discus thrower, shared his journey with pupils, and also spoke about his achievements, training, and the importance of diet and resilience.

James started throwing a discus at age 13 after winning a county championship before he started training at his local athletics club, Pembrokeshire Harriers.

In 2014 James won his first Wales Schools Championship which led him to compete in his first international tournament, where he won his first gold medal.

Inspired by James' story, students from nursery to Year 6 took part in a fitness circuit during his visit, during which £2,000 was raised.

This money will be put towards PE equipment and enrichments and Sports for Champions UK, which helps athletes fund their winter training.

Neil Sharp, PE subject lead and Year 4 teacher, said: “The children were fully engaged, and this is proven by the staggering amount of money raised both for the school and the charity.

"On the day, James spoke about a number of interesting aspects about his career but the parts about growth mindset and showing resilience in tough times really resonated with our children.”
