A TWO-CAR collision on the M5 in North Somerset last night has left a man in a critical condition.
The M5 northbound between J20 Clevedon and J19 Portishead was closed by police from around 10pm as a result of the crash.
The ambulance service also attended the incident and treated one casualty, a 46-year-old man who was taken to hospital after being arrested.
Police say the man was arrested on suspicion of driving while above the alcohol limit, and remains in a 'critical but stable condition'.
The road reopened just over two hours later at around midnight.
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "We were called shortly before 10pm last night (Wednesday, May 29) following a report of a two-car collision on the M5 northbound between junctions 20 (Clevedon) and 19 (Portishead).
"Officers attended, alongside the ambulance service, and closed the carriageway.
"A 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving while above the alcohol limit and was taken to hospital and is in a critical but stable condition.
"The vehicles were recovered and the road was reopened shortly after midnight.
