SUMMER restrictions on dog walking at Weston Beach may mean owners need to switch up their usual strolls.

From May 1 until September 30 no dogs are allowed on the main beach — from the Royal Sands to the Grand Pier, enforced from 9am to 7pm.

This can be a struggle for those who can't fit their strolls around these restricting times, so here are the top five dog-friendly places in Weston where you can walk your pooch:

1. Sand Bay

Sand Bay, despite recent confusion, is an all-year-round dog-walking beach.

Recent controversy over an accidental sign in sand Bay car park claiming members of the public would be fined £75 for walking their dogs on the beach led to hundreds of angry comments online from baffled locals.

However, Mike Bell, leader of North Somerset Council, confirmed the sign was indeed a mistake.

Sand Bay beach is often described as the hidden gem of Weston with its idyllic views and wide, sandy paths making it the perfect place to take your dog for a stroll, as well as the Sand Bay Tea Room where doggy Afternoon Cream Teas are served.

2. Ashcombe Park

One mile inland is the sprawling Ashcombe Park where dogs are permitted to roam off the lead throughout, with the exception of fenced playground areas.

It is a beautiful open space with vast wooded areas, and extensive paths to walk around.

It’s a perfect place for those with dogs that love to run around and play ball games, whilst also having large gates and surrounding fencing for those with dogs that like to venture a bit too far!

3. Clarence Park

Just a 15-minute walk from the main beach, you will find the charming Clarence Park.

Separated by Walliscote Road, half of the park is a large open grass field that allows off-lead walking.

However, in the other half of the park, dogs must be kept on their leashes in designated areas, but it offers a lovely cafe in the centre and a small playground for those with young children.

4. Weston Woods

Fourth on the list is Weston Woods located between Sand Bay and Weston-super-Mare Beach.

It is a surprisingly large woodland, taking around 2-3 hours to cover most of the area, great for those who like to go on longer adventures.

Once you set foot in the woods you can find a gravel mobility path for parents with pushchairs or wheelchair users. You can follow this path, which will take you to the Worlebury Hillfort, a popular location, or go for a quiet walk down multiple other paths.

5.  Weston Seafront

Although the main parts of the beach are restricted during summer you can still walk dogs all year round on the beach from Royal Sands to Uphill and from The Grand Pier to Marine Lake.

However, please remember that no dogs are allowed at Marine Lake at any time of year.

Although these are smaller areas they can still offer a lovely stroll for those who do favour the beach over any other areas.

Whether you choose to walk your dog along a beach or in one of Weston’s lovely parks or vast woods, make sure you and your pup are keeping to any local restrictions and staying safe this summer.
