A SCHOOL in Weston-super-Mare has built a new resource base to provide early intervention for pupils with moderate learning difficulties and associated developmental delay.

After a three-month building project, Locking Primary School announced that Treetops have now moved into their permanent home.

The school and trust have worked hard with the contractors, Wernick Buildings, and North Somerset Council to build a new resource base to provide early intervention for pupils with moderate learning difficulties and associated developmental delay.

Treetops Resource Base opened at Locking Primary School in September 2023 in temporary accommodation until the permanent resource base was completed, providing places early for children and enabling the development of excellent working partnerships and high-quality practices.

A specialist resource base aims to provide a pupil with a specialist intervention programme within a mainstream educational setting that enables them to make progress, achieve their identified outcomes, and continue to access the mainstream curriculum.

The new base offers a purpose-built nurturing environment that enables pupils to make good progress in an inclusive setting. It provides space for up to 10 children aged 4 to 7.

Treetops offers a bespoke learning environment for children who have access to education in the resource base, but also remain part of a mainstream class family and are very much part of the whole school.

We would like to thank the whole community for their support, patience, and understanding during the current disruption, particularly the residents of Lime Close, Locking Parish Council, Locking Meadows Preschool, and the ELAN central team.

Treetops is the latest addition to the trusts growing portfolio of SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) bases which includes: The Cove, (Autistic hub) at Mendip Green Primary School, Hearing and Language Resource Base (HLRB) at Mendip Green Primary School, The Nest Nurture Hub at Bournville Primary School, The Den at Milton Park Primary School and building work now underway at Mead Vale to provide an additional nurture hub.

SEND support is vital because it ensures pupils get the right help needed to reach their full potential.

This may involve smaller classes, specialised teaching methods, tailored learning environments, or additional support staff.

Extend Learning Academies Network is a group of North Somerset primary schools and nursery/preschools situated at Banwell, Bournville, Locking, Oldmixon, Mead Vale, Mendip Green, Milton Park, Walliscote, and Windwhistle.
