An artist from Weston-super-Mare has been selected for an international art exhibition.

Jack Hicks will showcase his work at Wells Cathedral from August 3 to 31 in an event organised by Wells Art Contemporary (WAC).

WAC received nearly 2,500 artwork submissions from around the world this year spread across 27 different nations.

The judges have finally decided on 121 artworks spanning a mix of disciplines and mediums; everything from painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, mixed media, sculpture, and installation.

All of which have been carefully curated to make up the Gallery Show in the cathedral cloisters.

The annual event has charmed the city's cultural sector, drawing several visitors to Wells.

The chair of WAC, Paddy O'Hagan, wishes to give local artists an opportunity to showcase their work while providing visitors with enriching experiences commonly associated with big city art galleries.

He said: "We want to not only deliver a platform for artists to show their work in such an inspirational and prestigious space, but also provide visitors with an enriching experience which is perhaps associated more with a large metropolitan art gallery."

This will be Mr Hicks' third time to participate in WAC's grand display of art.

The artist values the exposure that WAC offers the less familiar parts of the UK, such as the West Country, where he is originally from.

His latest piece, Understory, is influenced by his fascination with the natural world.

Mr Hicks explains: "I hope it expresses some of the wonder I feel when doing so, but also the unease and anxiety aroused by the threat human activity poses to our environment."

Besides the Gallery Show, the WAC Installation Show will concurrently feature 19 site-specific installations scattered around the cathedral and the accompanying Camery Gardens.

Mr O'Hagan appreciated the co-operation with the Wells Cathedral management allowing the enormous art showcase.

He added: "As always, we are immensely grateful to Wells Cathedral for allowing us to put on an exhibition of this size and scale."

Admission to WAC is included with the Wells Cathedral entrance fee.

For those unable to attend, a virtual exhibition will be available at www.wellsartcontemporary.co.uk.

WAC welcomes visitors to the event, whether in person or online.
