A special charity concert by the Central Band of the Royal Air Force is coming to Weston-super-Mare this summer.

This performance is not the first time Royal Air Force musicians have left their mark on the town.

For numerous years, RAF Locking had a significant connection with the local community, as home to the Western Band of the Royal Air Force until 1999.

When the base closed, its musicians redeployed to RAF bands at Uxbridge and Cranwell.

The community has a long history of supporting the RAF band, especially notable during the First Gulf War in 1991.

The musicians were deployed as the medical support staff in Saudi Arabian field hospitals.

One notable veteran, Malcolm Goodman MBE, served with the Western Band at RAF Locking throughout the 1990s.

It was the experiences of the Gulf War and the unwavering support of the Weston community that encouraged him to establish the Royal Air Force Music Charitable Trust in 2004.

Mr Goodman currently runs the charity from his home in Newark.

Since its establishment, the trust has raised over £100,000 in aid of service veterans and the wider armed forces community.

As the charity approaches its 20th anniversary, Mr Goodman has chosen to celebrate this milestone in Weston.

The Central Band of the Royal Air Force, where Mr Goodman began his RAF musical journey, will gather on September 27 at the Playhouse Theatre for a charity concert.
