National Highways said works are underway on the bridge, which carries the M5 over the railway near J21.

A spokesperson said: “We’re carrying out essential repairs and improvements to St Georges Bridge.

“The bridge carries the M5 over the railway near junction 21 for Weston-super-Mare.

“This work is critical to maintaining and improving safety for everyone who uses this busy stretch of road.

“We’ll be carrying out this work in two phases.

“The M5 will remain open for the majority of the works apart from a small number of full overnight closures.

“Dates of any overnight closures will be communicated in advance via road signage and this webpage.”

Phase one: November 2024 – summer 2026

The spokesperson also said: “We’ll be starting with repairs to the bridge from underneath the motorway. The M5 will be open as usual during this phase.”

Phase two: spring 2025 – summer 2027

They added: “This second phase will see us undertake the bridge deck refurbishment works on the motorway.

“This includes replacing the road surface, waterproofing and installing barriers on the sides of the bridge across both sides of the motorway.
