NICOLA Bartlett has launched a series of documentaries and short videos to encourage people to explore the Weston-super-Mare area.
Here is what she wrote about Weston’s “hidden gem”, Uphill.
“I still remember my first visit to Uphill, back in my teenage years on a day trip to Weston-super-Mare.
“The town’s beaches and bustling promenade were all well and good, but my eye was drawn to something a little different—a mysterious tower perched high on a hill.
“I knew immediately that I had to climb it, curiosity pulling me away from the traditional attractions and up to a place that promised a whole new perspective on the area.
“Uphill has stayed with me ever since. It’s a place that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and rich history, a hidden gem that I now think everyone should experience at least once.
“With stunning coastal views, ancient landmarks, and a serene atmosphere, Uphill feels like a world away from the hustle and bustle of the town.
“I still remember being blown away by its breath-taking scenery.
"Perched on the edge of the Somerset Levels, Uphill boasts panoramic views that stretch across the Mendips, the Bristol Channel, and even the Welsh coastline.
“But it’s Uphill Beacon that holds a special place in my heart.
"The tower was used as a windmill during the 1800s but eventually fell into disrepair.
“More recently, it served as a lookout point for the home guard during World War II.
“While I stood within its weathered walls today, my imagination ran wild as I began to picture the many roles it has played throughout the centuries.
“Another favourite spot of mine is St. Nicholas Church. The graveyard offers a tranquil place to reflect, with sweeping views over Weston-super-Mare that seem to stretch on forever.
“From this peaceful perch, the town’s bustling energy feels a world away, reminding me of why I fell in love with this corner of the Somerset coast.
“Keep an eye out for my new monthly column. Each month, I’ll be exploring a different corner in and around Weston; sharing the stories that make each spot unique.
“If you’d like a sneak peek into the wonders of Uphill, head over to 'Nicola Explores' on YouTube, where I’ve put together a short film about this special part of Weston.”
