Whilst showers delayed the start of Winscombe Tennis Club's internal club competition, the rain held off for the rest of the afternoon and the finals were able to be played recently.
Head Coach Mike Cook organised and revived this competition after a few years’ lapse and spectators were treated to some thrilling and closely fought battles.
Both the Ladies’ and Men’s Singles matches went to one set each with the winner being decided by tense championship tiebreakers which could have gone either way. Kerry Pinker narrowly beat Suzie Stockwell whilst Ant Moodie won over 14-year-old Liam Filer.
Unfortunately, the Ladies’ Doubles had to be postponed but Filer was back on court with his partner, Jim Stevens to take on Hatem Abidia and Nick Brown, who proved too powerful for them.
The Mixed Doubles match ended the afternoon’s entertainment with a fine display of teamwork from both couples. Games were closer than the score suggested with Ant Moodie and Sally Thompson winning over Chris Mullett and Suzie Stockwell in straight sets.
The club is hosting a Level Three external LTA tournament from October 23 to 29 to which visitors are welcome to come as spectators to view more high-class tennis and find out what the club has to offer.
