Will Burns headed into the British GT finale hoping to mount a challenge for more silverware, after his maiden overall podium finish at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain, at Donnington Park last weekend.
Unfortunately for the 2021 champion, it would prove to be a tough weekend around the circuit.
It became clear through pre-event testing that their car didn’t quite have the pace to be challenging for top honours across the race weekend, but Burns and team-mate Jack Brown didn’t give up without a fight and pushed hard to get the best result possible.
A strong qualifying performance in tricky changing weather conditions saw their combined lap-times put them a strong fifth on the timesheets, however, a grid penalty carried over from the penultimate round at Brands Hatch meant Burns would start the race from back in 10th.
Burns put in a brilliant performance in the opening stint, gaining four places through the opening 20 minutes. Getting into the thick of the action in an exciting five car battle, he continued to make progress and was sitting in fourth position heading into the mid-race pitstops.
Brown ended up taking the chequered flag eighth of the GT4 contingent, which means he and Burns end the 2022 season lying sixth in the final GT4 championship standings.
"It’s been a rollercoaster season in British GT this year," said Burns.
"We’ve had some standout moments with the three podium finishes including the win at Snetterton, but unfortunately the last few weekends haven’t really gone our way at all.
“The Century Motorsport team have done a great job again this season, working tirelessly to give us the fastest race car possible, so a huge thank you to them and my team-mate Jack for all their hard work. Now it’s time to have a well-earned rest after a hectic season and see what options come up for 2023.”
