Regional 2 Tribute South West: Teignmouth 31-29 Burnham-on-Sea
BURNHAM-on-Sea RFC put in a much better performance at the weekend in their match against Teignmouth away from home.
The match in the Regional 2 Tribute South West ended 31-29 in favour of the hosts, but Burnham took two losing bonus points home to Somerset.
The club laid a fee coach on for all supporters as a thank you for their unwavering support all season so the crowd was filled with Burnham fans.
And the crowd helped the Stags to a strong start in the match as Scott Beard crossed early on for a converted try as Scott Havercroft added the extras.
However this was swiftly followed by an unconverted try for Teignmouth and the score was 5-7.
The hosts retaliated again with a second unconverted try and they took the lead at 10-7.
Soon after, there was a yellow card for Tim Piper and Teignmouth scored immediately and managed to convert it for 17-7.
Burnham in the past would have possibly slip further however this time they bounced back with a try from Beard again and a penalty converted by Havercroft.
Once Piper came bac on the pitch, he was straight into the action setting up Samuel Everett for a try which Havercroft converted to take the lead 17-22.
That was the score at half time as Burnham fought hard to earn back the lead and with forty minutes to go they looked good for a win.
In the second half Burnham were defending well but a yellow card was shown for Everett as the referee said he collapsed the maul.
Soon after, from a line out, Teignmouth crossed for a try which was converted and it put them back in the lead at 24-22.
Sadly Burnham were shown another yellow card, this time for Beard for showing some boxing skills and the Stags were reduced to 13 men.
Having 13 men gave Burnham a distinct disadvantage and Teignmouth broke through again and it was converted and they went further into the lead 31-22.
Everett returned from the sinbin soon after, and Burnham were able to start mounting attacking moves to chase down the game.
Felix Grandfield made a cracking break however Burnham knocked on, but they won the ball back off the scrum and earned a penalty.
Then they won the second scrum and Piper scored to the left of the posts and it was converted by Scott Havercroft easily to make it 31-29.
Despite their efforts at the end, Teignmouth held on to win the game which had a total of eight yellow cards.
Burnham will take the two points and now look to continue improving next time out when they take on Topsham at home on Saturday, March 2.
