On Friday night over 80 club members and guests gathered in the Brean Country Club to celebrate the successes enjoyed on the golf course during the previous 12 months.
The event also marked the conclusion of the year's fundraising for the Captains Charity which in 2023 was chosen to be Macmillan Cancer Support.
The evening commenced with Club Captain Gordon Wheelaghan presented a cheque to Caroline Watkins who was representing the charity for £6438 which was an amazing amount to raise for a club of Brean's size, a small club with a big heart!
Following the cheque presentation they settled down to an excellent meal served by the Country Club team before continuing the night with the presentation of the awards for the 2023 season.
Over 60 trophies were given out and special recognition was made to the two Avalon League teams who won Division's One and Four respectively in 2023.
Two days later saw yet another competition cancelled after over an inch of rain fell on the golf course overnight.
The event to be lost was the popular AGM Shotgun Scramble which usually precedes the Club AGM. It also follows the Captains ceremonial Drive In so once again a bit of re-organisation was required.
The Drive In was delayed until lunchtime before the AGM went ahead as planned. By the time arrived for the 2024 Captains to strike their tee shots the sun was shining and it is hoped that this will be the case for the year ahead!
First up was Ladies Captain Carole Short who struck an arrow straight tee shot that aquaplaned on landing in the fairway.
Next to be introduced to the supportive club members who had gathered was Seniors Captain Tim Amy. His drive landed in the right hand rough and as has been the norm of late it remained plugged in the ground upon landing.
Finally Club Captain Dan Broom stepped up to the improvised teeing ground area near the putting green and hit the third excellent drive of the day to start his Captaincy year.
At the AGM that followed the three Captains received their jackets with 2023 Captain Gordy Wheelaghan officially handing the Club reins over to Broom.
The first job for Broom was to announce his chosen Charity for the coming year to the members which he named as The British Heart Foundation.
