Winscombe Rugby Club U15’s were in Malta this Easter weekend to attend a youth rugby tournament and returned to England as unbeaten champions.
24 players and 30 parents, coaches, and supporters of Winscombe’s youth teams flew to Malta for the five-day Youth Rugby Festival which provided two different tournaments for the players to compete in: a shortened format 15s tournament on the Saturday and a 7s tournament on the Sunday.
Games were played against both Maltese and UK teams, with the Winscombe squad winning all of their games in both the 15’s and 7’s and ending up with an all Winscombe Final.
Not only did the teams end up going unbeaten and winning both finals, but the squad did not concede a point throughout the whole tournament and scored a grand total of three-hundred points.
After the tournament, the event was finished off with a fancy dress BBQ and party night, during which the Winscombe team chose “Somerset Farmers” as their theme, accompanied by songs from the Wurzels.
The squad and coaches wore a bright orange tour top throughout the tournament, which were decorated with juicy, red Somerset apples thanks to local sponsors from across the county.
The Winscombe Rugby Clubs moto is “Friendship through Rugby”, something that was certainly achieved over the Easter weekend, and they encourage anyone between the ages of six and 16 who would like to play rugby to sign up.
