Weston Town FC continued their charge towards the title in Weston and District Division One with a big 3-0 win over Churchill Club 70 this weekend.
Town sat second place in the table before the game knowing a win would bring them within nine points of league leaders Isle of Wedmore, a bridgeable gap given Weston’s extra three games remaining.
The Weston team were coming off the back of a disappointing 3-1 loss in the County Cup and after initially struggling to adapt to a new 3-5-1 formation, a break in play allowed them to re-group.
They returned to play a different team, getting into their attacking rhythm going forwards and looking assured at the back.
As the half time whistle was looming leading scorer Chris Jones, who was making his return to the starting line-up, picked up a loose ball on the edge of the box and rifled home a shot with his left foot, giving the Town a deserved 1-0 lead just before the break.
The goal takes Jones to 18 for the season, a tally that currently makes him the league’s joint top goal scorer with Wedmore’s Daniel Arnison, but Jones has three more games than Arnison to add to his tally.
The midfield were excellent when the teams came out for the second period, maintaining possession and keeping the ball well.
Because of the pressure it didn’t take long for Weston to get their second, this time Jake Marshman played a smart give and go on the edge of the box before slotting the ball past Churchill keeper to make it 2-0.
Next it was Cam Milkins’ turn who played a neat one-two with Luke Weeks on the right before placing the ball into the back of the net for 3-0, gifting himself a birthday present and his team the three points.
The win leaves Weston second in the table on 37 points with four games to play, nine away from league leaders Wedmore who only have one game left in the season, putting Weston in the driver’s seat.
Weston Town take on 3rd place Uphill Castle on Tuesday night in a huge top of the table tie, before the return fixture against Churchill Club 70 on May 4th, with both games being must wins if Weston wish to lift the Division One trophy at the end of the season.
