Weston-super-Mare AFC have completed their 2023/24 league season, and their first year back in the National League South after four years has been a rather successful one.
The Seagulls finished 13th in the table after recording 17 wins, eight draws and 21 losses, keeping them far away from the relegation zone that at one point seemed to loom quite large beneath them.
It wasn’t easy going either for Weston who had a season that was interspersed with various injuries, match cancellations, and, at the end at least, a ridiculously hectic schedule that saw them play their last seven games in 20 days.
However, Scott Bartlett and his men took it in their stride despite their absence from the league in recent years and recorded wins against sides who have made the Conference League South their permanent home, including a massive 4-0 win over 3rd place Worthing.
Other big victories throughout the season included the 6-2 drubbing of Bath City as well as the 4-0 and 1-0 wins over Taunton Town, results that were ultimately instrumental to the relegation of their local rivals.
Reuben Reid was the squad's leading goal scorer this season with 12, the big striker made 37 appearances and was an ever-present force up top, giving his team mates a target and allowing them to play their football around him.
Keeper Max Harris, along with defenders like Callum Wood and Jason Pope, managed to keep 10 clean sheets over the season, a very respectable effort given the level of opposition.
Harris in particular was magnificent all season, the Cheltenham Town loanee continually made saves to keep his team in games that they otherwise wouldn’t have been.
The most impressive statistic of the season though comes from Lloyd Humphries.
Humphries managed to play every single minute, of every single game, in a long, long 46 game season, without injury or substitution.
That is 4140 minutes of football, not including cup games, between August and April, a mind-boggling number that his manager Bartlett calls an “incredible achievement”.
Weston also made the fourth round of the FA Trophy, only losing to Gateshead on penalties, and are also still yet to play their quarter final of the Somerset Premier Cup against Brislington, but a date has not been decided.
The Seagulls have made an excellent show of themselves in their return to the Conference League South, and next season they’ll sure want to make an even better one.
