Weston lad William Robinson picked up another win this weekend at Clay Pigeon Raceway in round three of the Global Karting League’s electric racing series.
William, age eight, has just stepped up to the faster cadet karts for 2024, having finished 2023 as GKL Bambino National Vice Champion, and with just three races under his belt this season his run of podiums continues, with four in a row.
Awesome driving from William at Clay Pigeon Raceway saw him qualify 2nd on the grid, just one tenth of a second off the pole sitter.
In the pre final race, William played safe with multiple karts ploughing into turn one, but he quickly took the lead.
Totally focused, and on a mission, William pulled off consistent fast laps extending his lead to cross the line in first with an 8.6 second gap, putting himself on pole for the final race.
In the final, William got a bit bogged down at the start, but was soon applying pressure to P1.
With a few overtake attempts blocked, William got around cleanly a few laps in, got his head down and pulled off consistent fast laps again to take the win with a comfortable 4.95 second lead.
With race wins for both the pre final and final, and securing the bonus points for the fastest lap, William takes the maximum scoop of points for this round, the second time this season, extending his lead in the championship.
William says “I’m so happy to claim maximum points this round. I love this track. I’ve raced here before as a Bambino driver, but not raced a cadet kart here until now.
“My aim was to win and extend my championship lead, and I’m so happy to achieve that, especially wearing a sponsors logo, it means a lot.”
William is delighted to be supported by Swallows Racing and enjoys learning more about the work that goes on behind the scenes to prep cars for racing.
Colin Porter from Swallows said: “William is a fantastic young talent, who we are sure will go a long way in Motorsport”.
William has big ambitions to follow in the footsteps of fellow West Country drivers, Jenson Button and Lando Norris and says: “Congratulations to Lando on his first F1 win at the weekend”.
