Weston-super-Mare CC’s 1st XI took on Golden Hill at home this weekend in game in which both sides recorded solid scores, but Hill’s total of 311 proved too much as they bowled Weston out for 231 runs.
Weston won the toss and decided to bowl first, hoping their attack could unsettle Golden Hill after last week’s stellar bowling performance, and they started well.
Paul Van Meekeren, 1-56 from 10 overs, and Dexter Trego, 1-39 from 10, opened the bowling and kept the scoring low until Trego dismissed Hill’s Lesego Senokwane in the fourth over, putting the visiting team at 1-16.
This brought in Hill’s Cyrus Shafi who paired with Jack Penn to bring their team back into the game, until Shafi was dismissed on 32 by Harvey Richards, 1-49 from nine overs, in the 20th over.
Penn changed the game with the bat, contributing 155 runs to his team’s total of 311.
Daaryoush Ahmed then joined Penn on the square until Van Meekeren sent him back to the changing rooms for 32 runs, leaving Hill on 148-3 in the 33rd.
Simon Hygate came into partner Penn for 138 runs until Dexter Trego ran Penn out at the end of the 47th over, and Hill saw the innings out for a big 311 in their 50 overs.
Shabel Ahmed, 45 runs, and Caleb Alexander, 8, put on a 50 partnership to kick the batting off for Weston until Alexander’s dismissal in the 12th over, and then Ahmed’s in the 18th, who was the first victim of Haseeb Noori’s six wicket outing.
Dexter Trego came in to add another 37 runs in 38 balls and Lachie Bailey added three more until both were removed by Noori at 109-4.
Davis Trego hit big to record 40 runs off 36 balls during his 39-run partnership with Chris Davidson before falling to Daniel Broome in the 31st, and Davidson followed the very next ball for 11, taking Weston to 148-6.
Robert Turner then hit 21 and Van Meekeren a team high 54, until their removals in the 35th and 42nd respectively, to help their team to 230-9, but it wouldn’t be enough as Hill's attack bowled out Weston’s bottom order for minimal runs.
The 10 wickets consigned the home side to a 231 total and an 80-run defeat after 42 overs but there were many good individual performances to take some comfort from.
Weston next play at home against Clevedon on May 18th.
