Wrington Redhill FC’s Player/Manager Leigh White has announced that he will be hanging up his boots after a 32 year long playing career.
Leigh, now near his 48th birthday, has enjoyed an incredible longevity in the game, chalking up more than 1,000 senior appearances.
After 10 years with the Club, he has completed a total of 291 appearances for Wrington Redhill to add to the 125 for Langford, a remarkable number considering he didn’t start his County League career until 34.
His first senior game was a debut for Henbury FC in the Gloucestershire County League at the tender age of 15 years and he was quickly spotted by Cheltenham Town, where he enjoyed two seasons and clocked up 40 appearances.
He then spent a period of time playing College football in America for Florida Institute of Technology before returning to England and playing for his hometown club Weston-super-Mare for the next six season.
Leigh made 261 appearances for The Seagulls, a number that would have been more if not for a serious ACL injury and played alongside prominent professionals such as Welsh international Robbie James and ex West Ham and Celtic player Stuart Slater.
After leaving Weston having helped them secure their position in the newly created National League South Leigh went on to make more than 100 appearances for Swindon Supermarine, Cinderford Town and Yate Town in the Southern Premier League.
As the years rolled by Leigh decided it was time to play a little nearer home and had a number of Westen League clubs seeking his signature.
He spent time at Welton Town, Clevedon Town and Clevedon United before playing for Langford Rovers to see out his playing career.
Unfortunately, Langford disbanded and that seemed to be that, but how wrong you can be.
At the age of 38 Leigh joined Wrington Redhill at the start of the 2014/15 season, the Club’s first season in the Somerset County League Premier division following promotion under then manager Alan Smith.
One of his proudest moments was captaining his side to triumph in the League Cup.
Having been skipper at Wrington Redhill virtually since his arrival at the club a decade ago, Leigh is now in the role of Manager.
He remains an extremely popular character with players and supporters alike and is exactly the type of person any club would be glad to have in their ranks, hardly ever missing a game or training session.
By passing on his vast experience to the new talent he’s brought in he seeks to again transform the fortunes of our club get us back punching above our weight in the premier division.
Everyone at Wrington Redhill Football Club wishes Leigh the best in his well-earned playing retirement.
