Winscombe Bowling Club’s start to the season has seen some success but also some losses, including a match that saw them face a mystery maestro bowler.
The club has entered another team into the County Leagues for the 2024 season following a large increase in membership the A team’s promotion to the Premier League last year.
That newly founded C team had a bizarre defeat when they faced Bristol in their third game of the season.
The away team arrived a man down and asked to borrow an extra player.
A lady, MT Mooney, was having a roll up on another pitch and agreed to play for the visitors.
She ended up proving to be the best player on the rink and their 32-9 victory won the match for Bristol.
The Winscombe C team, however, remain top of the Northern 3rd Division having won their other two games of the season
The A team have played twice in the 2nd Division of the Premier League, winning one match and losing the other.
The B team have only played one match, against Victoria, and lost by 12 shots.
In the Weston Over 55’s League Winscombe now have two teams entered The Originals and The Pioneers.
The Originals team beat Victoria last year to win the Cup Final on The Victoria Green and they are currently unbeaten for the season, enough to place them 2nd in the First Division.
The Pioneers are currently playing in the 2nd division of the Over 55’s League and aren’t fairing as well.
Many players in the team have not played competitive bowls and have struggled in most of their games so far.
They have played four matches, winning one and losing three, but are not bottom of the league and are sure to improve throughout the season as they gain valuable game time.
Winscombe Ladies’ season hasn't really got going yet, having only played two fixtures.
They won their first match of the season against Congresbury but lost a friendly at Yatton.
Finally in cup games Winscombe Men lost in the first round of both the Tony Allcock mixed competition and the NSBA 4 Dimensions.
However, they have won two rounds of the Bowls England 2x4’s competition, beating St Andrews by 10 shots and then Chew Stoke, after winning both rinks and by six total shots.
They go on to play Bath in the next round.
Winscombe Bowling Club is also hosting a very popular Men’s Triples Tournament on July 14th with full details on their website here.
