Weston-super-Mare CC’s first team travelled to Wellington CC this weekend and won by seven wickets after a fantastic bowling performance, including a six-wicket haul for Harvey Richards.

Richards’ six wickets helped dismiss the Wellington batting line up for 119 runs in the 34th over and put Weston in the driving seat before they’d even started their innings.

Wellington won the toss and decided to bat, with Dexter Trego, 1-26 from seven overs, and Lachie Bailey, 2-17 from seven overs, opening the bowling for Weston.

The Weston duo were bowling accurately and keeping the Wellington run rate low, biding their time until Bailey struck in the 6th over, dismissing Roberts at 16-1.

Trego then bowled Ruell in the 11th and Richards took his first of the day four balls later to put Wellington on 39-3.

From here on out it was Richards’ show as he tore through the Wellington line up.

He dismissed Sparks in the 14th and got Campbell for lbw in the 16th.

He then clean bowled Desave in the 18th and sent Colombage for a walk four overs later after wicket keeper Ryan Hearse ended Richards’ delivery with a quick stumping in the 22nd, reaching his fifer for the match.

Richards then finished off his six-wicket haul after George Bemand caught the ball off of Beal’s bat, reducing Wellington to a total of 78-8 after 24 overs.

Shabel Ahmed then joined the party, taking his first wicket of the day to dismiss Hendy and Bailey added his second as Weston bowled Wellington out for 119 after 34 overs.

The Weston batsmen knew the odds were in their favour in terms of the target score, but nerves were made a little shaky after opener Ahmed was removed for a duck early on, putting Weston at 2-1.

Any nerves were quickly calmed though, as Ahmed’s opening partner Jack Press and the ever-reliable Dexter Trego settled into their innings and took Weston to within reaching of victory.

Trego hit 48 off his 57 deliveries and Press hit a game-high 50 runs before being bowled by Colombage with his team looking comfortable at 93-2.

Trego fell soon after at 106-3, leaving Bailey, 11 runs, and Caleb Alexander, 8, to finish off the run chase in 27.3 overs and give Weston an impressive seven wicket win.

Weston now sit sixth in the table and go on to face Congresbury at home on June 1st.
