Weston Town FC have completed their treble winning 2023/24 season after a 2-1 win over Churchill Club 70 saw them lift the Weston and District Division 1 trophy.
The league victory comes after Town have already won two cups in the Attwell Shield and the Hospital Cup, meaning the squad end the season having completed an illustrious treble.
However, despite the final outcome of the season, Weston’s 2-1 victory over Churchill wasn’t completely straightforward and they had to wait until the dying minutes of the game before they confirmed their win.
The double cup winners travelled to Churchill knowing they had to win to secure the league title as they trailed Isle of Wedmore by three points, and the nerves could be seen as the game started with a frantic few minutes.
However, as nerves settled down, it was Town who soon took control but it was not the team who looked the more likely to open the scoring that went 1-0 up.
A long punt from the Churchill goalkeeper wasn’t defended well enough by Town and the Churchill striker took full advantage of the mix up, putting the home team ahead midway through the first half.
Weston made some injury enforced changes and Harrison Campbell came onto the pitch.
His introduction seemed to galvanise the Town players and the started to look back on it, playing hard working football and creating more chances, but the half ended with Churchill still 1-0 up.
As the second half started you could see Town were starting to get a bit nervous in their play and some uncharacteristic mistakes were creeping into the away team’s performance.
But with the clock ticking towards the 65 minutes, Town knew they had to score soon and as he has done quite often this season captain Connor Harding-James did just that, heading a superb cross from Cam Milkins over the Churchill keeper to make it 1-1.
The goal gave Town a lease of life and it would seem it was only a matter of time before the away team would grab a second and in 88th minute of this energy sapping game they did.
A ball out to Luke Weeks on the right was crossed in and the ball landed at the left foot of Harrison Campbell who made no mistake in smashing the ball into the back of the net to give Weston Town the 2-1 win, the title, and the treble.
