In the Weston and District Over 55’s League Winscombe’s new team, The Pioneers, gave a good account of themselves at highflyers Clevedon Promenade.

The Pioneers lost but won the captain’s rink and were so very close on two more as they lost 69-101.

Once again one player did not turn up and two points and 10 shots were lost before the game began.

The rink skipped by Jim Coleman came back from 0-8 to go into the last end two shots ahead only to be cruelly deprived of victory when Promenade picked up three shots to win 22-21.

Wilf Ainsworth's rink also came close.

In Division One of the same league Winscombe Originals continued their winning run with a hard fought contest against Yatton.

The Originals came back from 18 shots down at halfway to overcome a very competitive Yatton team by just four shots.

Dave Brown’s rink came from nine down to win by nine and Rob Lacy’s rink won by seven.

In the Captain’s rink there was a win by just one shot to give The Originals the 99-95 victory.

Winscombe also played in The Bowls England 2x4’s Competition.

They had won their first two rounds at St Andrews and Chew Stoke but this time they were up against much stiffer opposition.

They lost 23–33 but were not disgraced as they were up against Bath's Prem 1 team that included an England international in their line-up.

Winscombe actually won the same number of ends as Bath, but they were scoring ones and twos whilst Bath put higher scores on the board.

Winscombe Ladies played two games this week, the first at Portishead RBL in the North Somerset Triples League where they started well but couldn’t finish the win off.

Angela Ainsworth’s rink was up against an England player who only stepped in at the very last minute when a member of the Portishead team didn't turn up.

Their other two triples were nearly over the finishing line, but both came off second best in their last end, both losing by one shot and giving Portishead the 30-47 win.

The second women’s game saw injured players battled it out in a Ladies friendly match at Isle of Wedmore.

Winscombe won 45-33, winning two rinks and losing one, with particular praise for rink one who came back from 0-8 down to win by one shot.
