Weston-super-Mare CC welcomed locals Congresbury this weekend and lost by 85 runs after they were unable to find an answer to the visiting team’s 228 with the bat.
Weston did bowl okay in the game despite conceding over 200 runs, with Matt Knight leading the way with solid figures of 2-43 from his nine overs and Dexter Trego adding two more wickets from his 10 overs, but they were unable to stem the flow of runs from the Congresbury batsmen.
Trego also managed to hit a solid 42 runs from 40 balls during the Weston innings but was only joined in the double digits club by Jack Press, 31, and Caleb Alexander, 20, as the rest of their team fell for a combined 30 runs.
With the summer sun beating down Weston were told to bowl first after Congresbury won the toss.
Trego dismissed opener Jack Kearns at the start of the third over to put the visitors at 9-1, but from here Congresbury settled and started to pile on the runs to take them to 60 before Knight struck for his first and Weston’s second of the day.
Congresbury then accelerated their innings, Justin Yao hit a game high 64 runs until Chris Davidson sent him back to the changing rooms in the 30th over, putting Congresbury at 114-3.
The away team then went on to add another 114 runs in the next 20 overs, despite wickets from Knight, Trego, and Shabel Ahmed, to take their total to 228-6 from the full 50 overs.
Weston came into bat and got off to a quick start as opener Press hit 31 off 39 balls to help his team to 42 runs before being bowled in the 10th over.
Press’ opening partner Ahmed was then dismissed for five runs four overs later, putting Weston at 58-2.
Lachie Bailey then came into add six runs, and Davis Trego was dismissed for 0, before Dexter Trego started hitting big and reached his 42 by the start of the 26th over where he was clean bowled to take Weston to 91-4.
From this point the batting line up struggled, with Alexander’s 20 off 17 balls the only meaningful contribution to the run total, as they lost six wickets for 52 runs to be bowled out for 143 in the 41st over, giving Congresbury the 85-run win.
Weston CC now go on to face Taunton Deane CC on June 8th.
