Weston-super-Mare CC got their third win of the season this weekend as they defeated Taunton Deane by three wickets with Dexter Trego continuing his fine form this season with a run-per-ball 88.

The away win was Weston’s third of the season and moves them up into sixth place in the West of England Premier League Prem 2 Division after six games.

Weston won the toss and elected to field, hoping their bowling attack could limit the Taunton batting lineup to a reachable figure, and they did just that as they were led by Lachie Bailey’s four wickets to bowl the home team out for 220 runs.

The Taunton openers of Smith and Michael started well until Weston’s Matt Knight struck to remove Michael in the 13th over, putting Deane at 39-1.

They then continued to put points on the board as Harvey Richards, 1-46, Knight, 1-28, and Shabel Ahmed, 0-48, all had good overs until Richards took his one wicket for the day by bowling Chaffey in the 22nd to put Taunton at 91-2.

Taunton carried on with their consistent run rate and were on 135 runs when Davidson got his first of the day by removing Smith in the 31st and then picked up his second wicket and third wicket by the 41st over with Taunton at 165-5.

This opened the door for Bailey to attack the bottom order batsman and he did just that, taking his four wickets in the last five overs for figures of 4-35 from 8.3 overs and to end Taunton’s innings on 220, with Trego also taking a wicket.

Weston came into bat confident they could match the Taunton target and were helped on their way by Bailey’s 13 runs to put Weston on 41-1 after eight overs, before Trego and Ahmed started hitting big.

Ahmed hit a very respectable 43 to add to his team’s total before being removed by Hamid at the end of the 25th as Trego’s 88 runs from 86 balls, including 11 fours and three sixes, took Weston to 138 runs before his dismissal in the 31st.

With the team well ahead of the run rate Weston’s lower order batsmen were content to bide their time and wait for the right shots to play.

Davidson added 20 runs to his three wickets whilst Tim Foden contributed 12 more to them team as Weston passed the winning 220 run mark in the 46th over to win by three wickets and move them up to sixth in the table.
