Weston-super-Mare Cricket Club invited Downend CC to the coast this weekend and lost by eight wickets after being bowled out in just 25 overs for a measly total of 100 runs.
Downend won the toss and put Weston into bat, a decision that turned out to be perfect as Weston’s men fell at a rapid pace for 100 runs, with only three players reaching double digits and the highest score coming from Jack Press’ 20.
Weston did manage to get themselves off to a relatively strong start, with Press and Shabel Ahmed pairing up for 30 runs between them before Press fell for 10 to Downend’s Gunaratnam in the 7th over and replacement Dexter Trego followed two balls later for nought, putting Weston at 32-2.
Gunaratnam continued to haunt the Weston line-up as he dismissed S Ahmed for 20 run three overs later, taking the third of his five wickets for the day.
Lachie Bailey, who hit the team’s second highest score of 16 runs whilst partnering S Ahmed, was then returned to the changing room just three balls after as he was dismissed through a catch, putting Weston at 51-4 after 12 overs.
From here wickets started to tumble at an alarming rate as Caleb Alexander was trapped LBW for four in the 13th, Tahmid Ahmed suffered the same fate in the 14th for five, Chris Davidson was bowled in the 16th for three, and Ryan Hearse was dismissed for a duck in the 17th to put Weston on 78-8 and looking desperate.
Youngster Harvey Richards and number nine batsman Tim Foden did manage to add a few more runs as they paired up on the square for eight overs, longer than any other Weston partnership.
However, a big last stand wasn’t to be as Foden was caught at the end of the 24th over for nine runs and his replacement Gadsden followed an over later, leaving Richards not out on eight runs as Weston were bowled out for 100 after just 25 overs.
When Downend came into bat after the break they were in no mood to wait around as Callum Loud’s 71 runs from 46 balls helped his team to the winning margin within the 15th over.
Bailey and Gagsden took a wicket apiece for Weston as the side was resigned to the heavy eight wicket defeat.
Weston will now take on Keynsham at home on July 6th.
