The Somerset County League local derby between St Andrews A and Ashcombe A lived up to expectations, with visitors Ashcombe squeezing home a narrow victory by just one shot.

An outstanding performance by Jack Angove’s rink led the way for the Saints as they finished their match up first, 11 shots up.

The team of Angove, Wyatt, Wride, and Stott won 27-16, a score that was nearly enough to do it for the home side.

Derek Hurst’s quartet were the next team to finish, a final-end two was enough to bring Hurst, Keay, Davies, and Duffy back to 14-21.

The seven point difference in the game took the match score to 41-37 with Darrell Johnston’s rink still left to complete their game.

Johnston’s team found themselves down in the game and whilst No.3 Andy McMillan put the jack in the ditch to hold one point that was as good as it got as they went on to lose 14-19.

The loss meant the Saints came up just short overall at 55-56 as they only took two points from a very tight match.

St Andrews also played Ashcombe in the Women’s County League and lost 44-48, a defeat by four to suffer their first loss of the season.

Jill Bishop’s rink of Peters and Andrews had a good three-point win at 18-15 while Jackie Pitman with her team of Cracknell and Johns came back from 5-17 down after 12 ends to lose by just three.

Duffy’s rink of Cromey and Mangan also took a narrow loss as they came up just short 10-14.

The Women were in action again, this time against West Backwell in the DRT League but suffered a heavy 71-33 defeat.

St Andrews’ three rinks all put on similar performances as the line-ups of Peters, Tovey, Mangan, and Duffy, and Cracknell, Cromey, Bishop, and Favis both lost by a 12-point margin, 10-22 and 11-23 respectively.

Meanwhile the Andrews, Frost, McMillan, and Pitman rink lost 16-19 to complete the Saints’ 38-point loss.

The women now go on to a busy weekend as they travel away to Keynsham in the Fear Cup on Friday evening and then play home to Crewkerne on Sunday afternoon in the Southey Trophy.
