Weston-super-Mare AFC recorded their first home victory of the 2024/25 season this weekend with a 2-0 win over Chelmsford.
Second half goals from strikers Nick McCootie and Reuben Reid were enough to secure three points for The Seagulls, but they also saw new signing James Waite leave the pitch with an injury late into added time.
After the match Weston manager Scott Bartlett spoke on Waite’s injury. He said: “James was having a great game up till the time he got injured.
“He should have been carried off on a stretcher, he was in a bad way. It’s a bit of a sore point at the moment as the referee wouldn’t allow us to bring on a stretcher and I’m not happy about it.
“James isn’t in a good way and has a broken leg and ankle ligament damage. I’m gutted for him to be honest but he’s in good spirits and he’s a strong lad and he’ll be back soon.”
Bartlett also spoke about his team’s excellent performance.
He said: “It was another massive 3 points for us today. We knew it would be battle, Chelmsford are a tough, physical team and we knew it would be a tough game but we got the win and a clean sheet as well, so yes, I’m very pleased.
“There are no easy games at this level and to get the three points is really good. We struggled a bit to impose ourselves initially but made things count second half and took (both of) our goals really well, they were both excellent finishes”
“The players that came off given us everything but I thought that with the experience we had on the bench in Jordan Bastin, Reuben Reid and Nick McCootie that we might cause Chelmsford a few problems and that’s exactly what they did."
Weston’s leading goal scorer this season, Luke Coulson, also spoke after the win.
He said: “It was good to get that first home win under our belts for the season.
“It was a real battle today, one which we expected to be honest, and we adapted ourselves well.
“The gaffer has got us believing in ourselves and we’ll keep going to the best of our abilities.
“In terms of a 90-minute performance, it was probably one of our best of the season so far, Chelmsford are a tough team to beat but we kept going didn’t we and grounded out the result that we needed.”
