St Andrews B clinched promotion in the Somerset County League with a hard-fought away victory over Mark Moor.
The match, held on Saturday, saw Saints B withstand a powerful rally from the home team, ultimately securing their win by four with Tony Ware’s rink turning out as the most successful once again.
Being nine shots up after 10 of the 21 ends, the team continually demonstrated their prowess.
The nine points they gained means that Saints need merely four from their closing game, away to Winscombe C on Saturday, to emerge as divisional champions.
St Andrews, in their pursuit to retain the Somerset County Women’s League Mid Division championship, showcased an impressive performance against Victoria Blue on Saturday.
The team grasped 11 of the 12 obtainable points thanks to victorious rinks skipped by Jill Bishop and Debbie Johns, while Jackie Pitman drew.
Saints women are also in a promising position in the DRT League, following a comprehensive win at Chew Stoke.
Despite being a player short, they triumphed with a margin of 24 points.
The game highlight was a hotshot by Frid Allen, Margaret Tovey, Jill Bishop and Meg Favis.
Next, the men’s A team concluded their Somerset County League season by overcoming local rivals, Victoria B.
Winning rinks were skipped by David Stott and Derek Hurst, while Andy McMillan narrowly missed out on the last end, leading to Saints finishing in mid-table.
In a surprising twist, the Over-55 League saw Saints face a home defeat by the bottom team Yatton, causing them to keep a wary eye on the two relegation spots.
In other news, Weston Seagulls’ fine run in the national indoor Fantastic Fives competition came to an end away to a very strong West Berks team at Newbury.
St Andrews Women maintained their winning streak in their county league, scraping a win by three while at home against Isle of Wedmore.
They were five down at halfway, followed by a six by Jill Bishop’s trio which nudged them ahead.
However, a significant defeat on their sole losing rink proved costly as they lost by five at home to Portishead RBL.
